...Russian researchers showed that rabbits fed a diet rich in saturated fats and cholesterol develop hardening of the arteries, some doctors have suspected that the same thing happens in humans. Indeed, in populations that consume more of these foods, there is a higher level of cholesterol in the blood-serum cholesterol-and a greater incidence of coronary disease. But the board found such statistical evidence no more than circumstantial (although it did accept similar studies for obesity's links with both heart disease and cancer). The panelists noted that when attempts were made to reduce serum cholesterol by dietary...
Even so, the board hedged its bets. It emphasized that people with a family history of heart disease or otherwise at risk because of such factors as obesity, high blood pressure or diabetes should rely on polyunsaturated fats in their diet and have blood fat and serum-cholesterol levels checked. It also said that even healthy people should consume no more fats than necessary to maintain their proper weight.Noting that a high-cholesterol diet tends to be a high-calorie diet, Panelist Robert Olson of St. Louis University said, "we think that the emphasis should be put on calories...
...some burlesque science fiction, the nation seems to have been injected with a truth serum designed to make people bore one another to death; it has given them a compulsion to confide embarrassing intimacies, has led them on to endless emotional ostentations, as if, as Saul Bellow once wrote, "to keep the wolf of insignificance from the door." A man sits down at a New Jersey dinner party, beside a woman he met half an hour before, and hears in elaborately explicit detail from soup through coffee, how the woman and her husband managed to conquer their sexual incompatibility with...
...Pathologist Paul Lacy and his colleagues at Washington University have devised a way to encourage islet survival-at least in laboratory animals. Taking healthy islets from rats, the team "incubated" them at room temperature for seven days, then injected them into diabetic animals, along with an immunosuppressive serum. More than 100 days later, the transplanted islets were still producing insulin in the diabetics, whose condition improved markedly. The next major question: Will this successful experiment in rats also work...
...heathen neighbors were stuck with needles, and bewitched fruits were planted in their gardens. One devotee claimed she was used as a naked altar, raped, and smeared with chicken blood, to be used later to curse the foe. In the poison phase, clotheslines were doused with smallpox serum, garden tomatoes with formic acid, and doorknobs with caustic concoctions. One of the five cultists on trial with the swami admitted popping a poisoned chocolate into a victim's mouth (disliking the flavor, the victim spat it out). In stage three, an arsenal was allegedly assembled, and bombs were planted next...
