...SEEMS sometimes that a government's only job is to define the rules by which politics may be played. It seems that a democracy is another such government until that day when the public servant looks forward over his shoulder and sees the future, as Senator Charles Goodell did during the Carswell controversy: "My main point was that Carswell could still be on the Supreme Court in the year 2000." On such a day democracy distinguishes itself from other forms of government; when the crunch comes it allows for vision from below. At least that is what the Carswell rejection...
...Alcindor wishes to be known henceforth. Jabbar, a convert from Roman Catholicism, is not a Black Muslim like Boxer Muhammad Ali, but a member of Islam's orthodox Sunni sect. As for his new name, he explained to a press conference that Kareem means "noble" or "generous"; Abdul, "servant of Allah"; Jabbar, "powerful." Jabbar, who left on a three-week tour of Africa with his bride of one week, added that he did not expect the N.B.A. Milwaukee Bucks to give up his old name immediately "because I've become famous with...
...Rakewell, the protagonist of the piece, Frank Hoffmeister is competent but not brilliant. His voice is strong and far-reaching, but his diction is often poor, and especially in the first act, the conductor has had him sing much too slowly. Ernest Triplett as Nick Shadow, Rakewell's servant, dominates the production, with both a good voice and an understanding of his role that makes him also a strong actor. Eunice Alberts as Baha, the bearded lady, is a fine comic heroine, with a rich vibrato that nicely complements her outlandishly ornate costume. Irene Elvin as Anne Truelove...
...RAKES PROGRESS, with its Stravinsky score, its W. H. Auden-Chester Kallman libretto, and its ultimate genesis in Hogarth, is one of the most interesting artistic ventures of the century. Tom Rakewell is portrayed as an innocent, even likeable young man, who is led astray by the conniving servant, Nick Shadow, and robbed of his riches and his innocence. After Rakewell has scorned his true love and taken up with the bearded lady, Shadow reveals himself as a diabolical agent, and plays Tom a card game, with Rakewell's soul as the stakes. Although Tom wins at this operatic Seventh...
...arrest provided the first lead in an unfolding scandal that has already embarrassed the regime of President Nguyen Van Thieu. Mrs. Quy, 26, turned out to be a very well connected young woman. She is the daughter of a senior civil servant who works for South Viet Nam's Senate chairman, and is the girl friend of an army major. She lived in a house owned by Vo Van Mau, a deputy in the National Assembly, who is loyal to Thieu's regime. When police searched another of Mau's properties, they found vials that bore traces...
