...legislators were assembled in special session. Governor Ingram Stainback wanted a law which would end the paralyzing strike of Harry Bridges' Communist-line International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (TIME, July 4). Nobody was in the mood for comedy. Up before the legislature were 19 different proposals for emergency action. One soon passed in the house, but ran into delay in the senate. It would authorize the territory to set up its own stevedoring company, rent docks and equipment from the struck companies and operate them until the strike was settled...
Trilby & Tweeds. The title made only a slight change in his double routine. Before each session of the House of Lords, the new peer, in his crumpled tweeds and battered old trilby, bought a third-class railway ticket and hopped a train for London. After that he returned to Oxford-to his wife, who refused to share his title ("We are simple people," she said), to his lunches of cold mutton and prunes, and to his troubled surveillance of some of Balliol's new postwar, government-aided scholarship students. Some 200 students and teachers have been hard at work all month. The students, who come from 20 states, had paid about $250 tuition apiece for the six-week summer session; the teachers, many of whom play for northern symphony orchestras, got their expenses only. Main event of the evening: Grieg's Concerto in A Minor, with Guest Pianist Eugene List, the ex-G.I. who played for Truman and Stalin...

...conference of Commonwealth finance ministers met last week. An official later described the cheerless scene in Room D of the British Cabinet Offices: "They sat at blue-black, baize-covered tables in a hollow square, all looking inward and all with their backs to the wall." At one morning session, scheduled to begin at 10:30, a Commonwealth representative arrived ten minutes late. "Good evening," said Chancellor of the Exchequer Sir Stafford Cripps, with a frosty smile. "Good afternoon," was the reply...
