The film does so with a wisely chosen cast of voices (Ian Holm stands out as smarmy pig propagandist Squealer) and eerie visuals, from the crudely painted ANIMAL FARM sign at the commune's entrance to the pigs' grisly show trials. You'll have a hard time setting a rattrap after seeing a scapegoated (scape-ratted?) rodent swinging from a gallows. The film retains both the Russian Revolution parallels and Orwell's timeless warnings against slippery language and manipulation; in a clever if heavy-handed addition, pigs salvage a TV set from the farmhouse to keep the animals...
Helped by small grants and loans, Zackheim set off on her five-year quest for Lieserl, crisscrossing Switzerland, Germany, England, Hungary and especially Serbia. Even while bombs burst, she visited Mileva's ancestral villages, seeking her kin or anyone close to her family, including Serbian Orthodox priests and nuns, and holding many hours of coffee-table conversation, to say nothing of rummaging through countless baptismal records and archives for key documents. Many of them turned out to have been lost in the endless Balkan wars; others relating directly to little Lieserl may have been destroyed by Mileva's protective father...
...conclusions, of course, are debatable. Who, after all, set up and continues to dominate every last one of these hierarchical, market-driven institutions? And where, one does begin to wonder, are some of those men who have thrived under this system, who were well fathered and are themselves wonderful fathers, who participate usefully in the world around them? Surely, if she already believes that she can learn much from looking outside the mainstream, these men are no less meaningful than the subjects she chose...
