...Alike. Whatever Chicago devises, it may be hard put to match the remarkable curriculum announced last week by Brown University. Heretofore, Brown had a standard general education setup: required courses in three basic areas (humanities, social studies, science and math), all of them to be completed in the first 2½ years. To foster breadth of interest, students were restricted to a maximum of twelve one-semester courses in their major. But starting next fall, Brown will banish all this for a frankly "permissive" system based on the idea that early specialization may lead to later generalization...
What forged this friendly setup was a 19th century custody battle over the infant University of Toronto, which both secular and religious educators wanted to run. As a compromise, the Ontario legislature put in a nonsectarian administration to control degrees and the teaching of "university" subjects, mostly science. Sectarian colleges were then invited to join and teach "college" subjects, mostly humanities. St. Michael's in 1887 became the first to join...
...nation's busiest party line is a shortwave voice communications setup called the Citizens Radio Service. It was established by the Federal Communications Commission as a short-distance (150 miles maximum) two-way radio system for people who needed it for business or professional reasons: a doctor keeping in touch with his office from his car, taxicab fleets sending directions to cruising cabs, contractors issuing orders to trucks, farm wives calling to their husbands in distant fields. In a rash moment, the FCC also authorized house-to-automobile communi cations on a noncommercial, or "Honey, bring home a loaf...
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee is a 1,800-acre farm run largely by its 100 boarding boys and girls, who pay tuition. Under a unique setup, their high-school education is provided by the Rabun County public school system, which gives the farm school $1 a year as rent for classrooms, supplies ten teachers and 130 day students (who pay no tuition). To compound these contradictions, overall control is vested in the Presbyterian Synod of Georgia, and the school trustees make a point of seeing to it that religion is stressed for all 230 students...
...Administration's design requires that top U.S. Government and military commanders survive an atomic attack, and that they maintain absolute control over their weapons systems. Under past plans, neither condition has been met. Says one Pentagon arms-control expert: "Our setup was actually designed to act in time of general var like a chicken with its head cut off. The brain could be destroyed and the nervous system severed. Then the military muscles would just jerk in uncontrolled spasms." To hold the chicken together, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara has spent several hundred million dollars toward a taut new National...
