Hopkins entered the Army Aviation School at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in September, 1917, and was sent to Foggia, Italy, where he received his commission after seven months' training. From Foggia he went to Vendome, France, for further training and later to Clermont-Ferrard for practice in bombing and formation flying.
