...Mayor Kenny made no effort at all to produce votes for Boss Hague's candidate, Driscoll managed to pile up a plurality of some 18,000 votes. (The day after the election, Mayor Kenny received a small parcel from Wene's press secretary. Contents: a catsup-stained, seven-inch carving knife and a message: "Dear John: I pulled this out of Wene's back this morning; I thought you might need it for future reference...
Political Passion. Ever since the tragic Bogota uprising of April 9, 1948, Colombia had been drifting toward just such a moment of force. Liberals, having healed the division that cost them the presidency in 1946, used their congressional majority to push the election date seven months forward in expectation of victory. Errors Reports. This week, with the Big Seven title safely tucked away for an other year, Wilkinson & Co. have an old score to settle. There was good news for Haydn-lovers last week: nine symphonies (of the composer's massive crop of 104) were released by three different companies. From Boston's Haydn Society, on three LP records (6 sides) came seven which are seldom heard, performed with more spunk than spirit by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Jonathan Sternberg. Most interesting of the seven: Haydn's First, composed when he was 27, and his Thirteenth ("Jupiter"), which seems to reflect his happiness with his new job as musicmaker at the Esterhazys, a job he held for 30 years. Also...
