James Jones is the Stanley Kowalski of U.S. letters. Bulked into the sweaty T shirt of latter-day realism, he stirs raw sex, raw talk, raw emotions and raw ideas in a crude vat of the rawest home-brewed English. In From Here to Eternity, this concoction helped put across Novelist Jones's abrasive vision of a little-known area of U.S. life, the peacetime Regular Army. Steamy with sex, Some Came Running may hit the same one-armed bandit of bestselling success, but it is more than one-third longer (some 700,000 words in all) than king...
...First Love" by Jonathan Kozol is a short story about the not so innocent first love of two thirteen year olds: Pixie, the innkeeper's daughter, and Cherub, a visiting youth. It has all the ingredients of an excellent story, humor, sex, concrete and abundant metaphor, good description and suspense. The dialogue is sometimes devastating: (Pixie): "You know what Daddy has said? Daddy says they don't wear bathing-tops in the desert. He says I will only need my panties." The story is somewhat less than excellent, however, because of spotiness. There are lapses in the consistency of metaphor...

Liu was sternly "advised" to behave himself, but he airily replied: "Please, I cannot bear so many well-intentioned warnings...
...vocalist-is boomeranging. NBC's Perry Como and Dinah Shore, whose early success inspired the idea, enjoy the personal touch and the production support that still set them apart. Though her ratings have been ungallant, ABC's Patrice Munsel has given TV a welcome fillip of talented sex and voice appeal. But the Pat Boones, Giselle MacKenzies and Patti Pages have drawn neither rating nor rooting, and Guy Mitchell will get the ax at ABC this month. Biggest disappointment: Frank Sinatra, now busily trying to puff some life into his costly ABC-Chesterfield series...
Peyton Place (Jerry Wald-20th Century-Fox) cuts some of the sex and violence from Grace Metalious' hugely profitable peeping tome (300,000 hardbound, 3,000,000 paperback copies sold) about low jinks in old New Hampshire. The novel's small-town citizens were guilty of murder, suicide and such richly varied venery as nude swimming, bundling in convertibles, bastard-getting and incestuous rape. The film script tidies up a few of these sensations, softens a calculated abortion to an involuntary miscarriage, and lets a couple of villains become last-reel good guys. But there is still...
