...Just two years ago, the Diet passed Japan's new constitution. MacArthur himself had written the first draft in his clear, old-fashioned hand. It reduced the Emperor from godhead to symbol, abolished the feudal aristocracy, gave the Diet genuine power to make laws, guaranteed popular liberties, decreed sex equality, renounced the nation's right to make war, even for self-defense. It contained such alien concepts as "public servants" (ancient custom made bureaucrats responsible only to the Throne) and "pursuit of happiness" (many a Japanese finds this Jeffersonian concept immoral...
Prudish parents have long been a favorite target of the psychiatrists. Puritanical homes are often blamed for giving children a neurotic attitude toward sex. But one psychiatrist thinks that modern parents can carry their modernism too far. Dr. Flanders Dunbar, 46, mother of a seven-year-old daughter and author of the 1947 bestseller Mind and Body (TIME, Oct. 6, 1947), sounds the warning in her new book, out this week, Your Child's Mind and Body (Random House...

In the female, FSH stimulates the growth of follicles in the ovary and makes ovulation possible; in the male, it stimulates tubules in the testes that produce sperm. Dr. Li isolated it from the pituitary glands of freshly killed sheep. Since other researchers were looking for it, too, Dr. Li says: "I was damn lucky. I hit on the right method." With the same sort of "luck...
...hormone from the adrenal glands. In 1946, with the help of Merck & Co. chemists, they developed a compound from the adrenal glands of cattle. It was called Compound E (full name: 17-hydroxy-11-de-hydrocorticosterone). Compound E belongs to the steroid group of body chemicals. So do the sex hormones (a link with relief during pregnancy) and some bile products of the liver (a link with jaundice). Compound E was obtained later from an element of bile. Seven months ago Mayo's began treating human patients...
