...Aibel's column on the pros and cons of the "Sperm Bank Solution" (Jan. 21) prompts the question: What will the Deans do about such rampant sexism? A College that cannot tolerate single-sex final clubs surely can't abide female students being denied honest and lucrative work solely because of gender. Their exclusion from the job opportunities enjoyed by men makes mockery of the University's non-discrimination policy. ...hidden not too deeply in Keillor's amusing anecdotes lies a dark, growling edge of conservatism that could border at times on sexism, if one reads deeper into his pithy one-liners. For example, a distant relative is glorified because he, "on his last day, enjoyed beer and victory at cards and held a young woman in his arms." The script tries to redeem itself by giving Mulqueen's former girlfriend, Isabella (Matilda May), a key role in the resolution of the plot; but because her role is so impoverished throughout most of the film, the effect...
...Reed waited for their honest, hard-working husbands in modest homes on safe, tree-lines street. Their children learned to ride their bicycles and played games with the neighbor's kids--even after sunset. Trouble lay just under the surface, of course: people had to confront racism, McCarthyism and sexism; they built bomb shelters and thought about the Cold War. For the most part, though, these things remained submerged...
