While his ability as a receiver may be a shade below Wark's, Martelli's arm is nearly as strong, and there is no comparison at the plate. The Revere native came within five runs batted in of breaking Mike Stenhouse's single-season mark of 40 last year, hitting 336 and swatting four homers and a team-leading six triples. Behind Martelli is sophomore Kevin Lennon, a strong fielder but weak at bat, and hard-hitting freshman Mickey Maspons...

...table and a few cane chairs used for everything from long business conferences to quick lunches. Bergdorf's Mello remembers "buying a collection of Armani's under a bare light bulb in a tiny hotel room. We could hardly see the colors, so he took the lamp shade off." In 1975, when the Giorgio Armani Co. was founded, it had a working capital of $10,000 and one receptionist, a student whom, Galeotti recalls, "we could pay so little we had to let her study...

...pickup truck, smear on dabs of melting suntan cream and flip the switch of a cassette player. To the scratchy strains of martial music, they start downhill, making a short tour and ending up under the spreading roots of the giant ceiba trees, planted to provide a parasol of shade over the baking town square. The little parade passes by rusting cars, yelping dogs, gawkers peering out of their doorways while washing their hair or looking on while drying off with a towel...
