...such troubles will seem far behind, however, when she takes to the open water, her hull a glimmering swath of royal blue, red and gold, with the royal coat of arms on the bow and the royal cipher on the stern. The yacht's 12,000-h.p. twin-shaft turbine engines are capable of propelling her 5,769 gross tonnage at a sprightly 21 knots. Her 510-ton fuel capacity can sustain a 2,800-mile voyage without stopover...
Just as Carpenter fails to take advantage of the city, he also forfeits the prodigious potential of his characters, particularly that of Isaac Hayes, who plays the Duke of New York. His ebony dome intact from the days of Shaft and his other forays into the Blaxploitation genre, Hayes could be a marvelously evocative figure--instead, he comes off as a dummy with about three lines and a shiny forehead and automobile. In November an oil-drilling rig accidentally punctured a salt-mine shaft under Jefferson Island, La., sending much of a 1.5-sq.-mi. lake gurgling down into the dome. The most frightening accidents have involved still another use of salt domes: as cheap, convenient storage tanks for crude-oil and natural-gas products. Last fall hundreds of people had to flee Mont Belvieu, Texas...
Because of the foreign-exchange squeeze and war disruptions, Nicaragua has a desperate shortage of spare parts. Decisions about economic priorities are either not being made or being made badly. Says a foreign economic observer in Managua: "You have a former guerrilla trying to decide between importing a drive shaft for a fishing boat, a tractor part, medicines or a Mercedes for his commandante. For somebody he will be making the wrong decision...
