According to this account, the CIA had solemnly denied to Kennedy that Barghoorn was a CIA agent, but when the professor returned he told the President that he had indeed been spying for the CIA. Later the CIA got wind of the plot against Kennedy-but did not warn him because the agency wanted to eliminate what it feared to be a threat to its own existence...
