...Jars. Peanut farming has become a highly mechanized business. Beginning in late April, mechanical planters insert seed peanuts into the soil. Though many city dwellers may think peanuts grow inside glass jars, they actually burgeon underground, like potatoes. Four or five months after planting, a machine called a "digger-shaker-inverter" trundles over the field cutting under the plant, lifting it from the soil, shaking off clinging dirt and placing it back on the ground to allow the peanut pods to dry partially. Finally, a peanut combine picks up the plants and separates the mature pods...

While the district is all white, it is not the whiter shade of pale reflected in the gracious homes of Shaker Heights. The 20th's whiteness is tinged with the dirty grey of Cleveland's heavily industrialized flats; the Cuyahoga River, which cuts across the district, caught on fire several years ago because it was so heavily polluted with industrial waste. ...somewhat lugubrious in its treatment of the light dance-tunes, and their heavily accented version of the Shaker song "Simple Gifts" sounded a bit like "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", but these failings were more than compensated for by their delicacy during the so-called duo between the Bride and her Intended, and by the almost fervent, prayerful quality they brought to the quiet ending...
