Beyond All Isms. A heavy interplay of curious coincidences and a shallow depiction of character place this book with Silone 's frailer fiction. However, the fact that the main sacrificial act in the novel is performed by a Fascist is significant as well as startling. It marks how much the world and Silone have changed from the 1930s, when left-v.-right politics was not only the ruling international passion but a kind of immutable moral law. The Fox and the Camellias is a book beyond Fascism, Communism, socialism or even humanism. It is a Christian statement, arguing essentially...

...only does Hadley deal inadequately with strategy, but he also presents arms control in a shallow manner. Although he says several times that arms control is no panacea, his failure to explore the actual essence of arms control yields that impression. In other words, the reader puts down his book thinking that if only the nation were as bright as Hadley and consequently understood the need for arms control, it could then buy "it" downtown somewhere...

...Shallow Cycle. Despite such signs, the optimism of those who look for a six-month recovery is by no means universally shared. "It would be premature," warned the First National City Bank of New York in its monthly letter, "to assume that recession problems are all behind us and that a rapid climb lies ahead." For one thing, the present uncomfortably high rate of unemployment (6.8%) is expected to continue for some time. ...three previous rounds, Palmer had scored three straight pars at the par-four 18th; last year, his birdie at the 18th won the Masters. This time Palmer's drive split the middle of the fairway. But his second shot, hit too hastily, veered into a shallow trap at the right edge of the green-the same trap Player's ball had found minutes before. The TV cameras panned in, showed Palmer's ball "plugged"-half buried in the sand-and Player began nervously to sip his drink...
