...same kind of thinking occurs in Foster's unfinished project for the British Museum. When its library moved to massive new premises a mile away, it left behind one of the great English spaces: the 1857 Round Reading Room designed by Sydney Smirke, with its shallow dome, surrounded by a two-acre internal court. To demolish this masterpiece would have been unthinkable. It had to be preserved, and Foster's scheme for so doing entailed sweeping away the clutter of now obsolete bookstack buildings from around it and covering the court with a light glass-and-steel roof, thus creating...

...usually characterized by exaggerated horizontal plinths and floating fractured wedges. Her fondness for the stretch is expressed in Cincinnati partly by what she calls "the urban carpet": the street becomes the lobby floor, which slopes gently up and becomes the wall. It's also evident in the long, shallow staircase that slices through the building like a rapier. From this staircase visitors can get fleeting glimpses of the art from unusual perspectives, a pattern that's repeated throughout the gallery, which is punctuated with jagged openings (some bringing in light from the skylights on the top floor) and unexpected views...

Parr, in turn, grow into 8-in. smolts C in about two years, and it is these small, silvery fish that make the improbable migration from freshwater river to saltwater ocean. Smolts that survive the trip--and plenty don't--spend four years at sea, feeding...

Poster-boy Freddie Prinze, Jr. stars as the untried hero Christopher Blair who is launched into the forefront as the hero of the Confederation. Prinze, sporting a tiresomely defiant grin throughout the whole movie, brings little life to the character of Blair. He is teamed up with an equally shallow Matthew Lillard as best friend Maniac, a hotshot wild man and sidekick who does little to advance the plot. In fact, because of a trite dialogue, there is relatively little character development from the entire cast. Aside from Blair, the other characters may just as just as well have cameo...

...teenage mother, desperate for a handhold in the long climb through a childhood in the ghetto names her child Imani or "Faith." Though the simple significance of the appellation may initially seem shallow and even trite, it's this almost innocent, simple connection that gives Imani All Mine its poignancy. The account of child mothering child becomes a story of epic determination which grabs readers and takes them on a ride through a world about which they know little, if anything...
