...motive are brought in out of left field to wrap up this rambling indecisive attempt at a thriller "American style." It is as if in Chinatown Jack Nicholson only discovered that John Huston had any interest in land just before he shot Faye Dunaway. Nor does the film's shallow social satire allow its all star cast to flourish any more than does the plot. Mastoianni is locked into a dull role as a middle class detective unsure of how to treat the high society Torinisti he is investigation, in particular how to deal with his growing non-professional interest...
Despite the buoyancy Tacchella successfully distills from the group scenes, Cousin, Cousine doesn't live up to its billing as a winsome masterpiece, largely because the amorous cousins, played by Marie Christine Barrault and Victor Lanoux, are au fond too shallow. While no one would demand a trenchant political or psychological comment from romantic comedy, we do expect two distinct and compelling personalities whose collision will charm or amuse us. There is too much drinking, too much smoking, too much acute description of mental states. The author, unwilling to waste a scrap of anguish, views the browned-out scene through the eyes of each gloomy participant in turn. Boredom, peevishness...

In some areas, they have clogged shallow rivers and lakes and killed fish by extracting oxygen from the water. They have even drowned a few humans who have become entangled in their island-like mats of vegetation...
...chose to make a political film in and about a country whose language he does not speak. But it is even more unfortunate that, rather than avail himself of the services of an interpreter, he deliberately utilized the language barrier, apparently to place particular emphasis on Amin's frighteningly shallow, misinformed, and warped worldview. The effect however, is not to frighten, but to amuse...
