That may be so, but many soldiers at Aberdeen expressed profound shame at the scandal swirling around them. Phillip Cook, 31, a drill sergeant with the 143rd's Bravo Company, says he saw fear in the eyes of his newest class of trainees, who arrived at Aberdeen on Nov. 9, just after the allegations made headlines around the country. "It took a lot of the power base away from my hat," he says, referring to the distinctive Smokey the Bear hat worn by training sergeants. "It used to be when they saw this hat, they knew that...

...supposed to be Harvard University, the finest school in this hemisphere, if not the world. It has been host to many speakers of first-rate intellect who came to impart their knowledge and wisdom to the students. Mel Gibson doesn't belong here; he belongs in People magazine. Shame on the Graduate School of Education for bringing him here and wasting Harvard's precious resources. My father, grandfathers and uncle instilled in me a hunting ethic: respect for wildlife and habitat, fair chase, safety and reverence for the bounty and wonder of nature. But shame on us, the upstanding hunters, too for not pursuing these individuals. The hunting community should be the leading voice calling for immediate bans on these practices and criminal penalties against those who use them. CHADWIN B. SMITH Arlington, Virginia...

Before I go any further, I must admit to a secret shame in my past--I almost joined the NRA when I was an impressionable youngster. I happened to be the Camp Mah-Kee-Nac riflery champion, and at the tender age of 12 all I knew about the NRA was that they supplied the cool patches that read "Marksman" and "Marksman First Class." I also knew that the riflery counselor, an ex-Marine named Leigh and a genuinely cool guy, was a member of the NRA. (Though even in my naivete I was a bit disturbed by his tendency...
