Basically, the author handles the elements of warfare as a physician would examine parts of the human body, without prudery or shame. The result could be one of the publishing sleepers of the season. For while most people do not like to openly discuss the facts of war, they are secretly fascinated by them. There is also the anxiety factor. Not since the nuclearwar shivers of the '50s, which peaked with the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, has there been so much discussion about the possibilities of global conflict...
Just as easily, however, a loss tonight can make 1982 one more soldier in that long, grey line of Lean Years, and send seniors Mike Watson, Wade Lau, Alan Litchfield and Scott Powers into the Harvard hockey Hall of Shame, joining the class of '81 as the only two never to play in the ECAC Championship since there have been ECAC Championships...
...have to take the program's word for much of it. The problem, you see, is that with a couple of notable exceptions, the songs in this production couldn't make it over the formidable wall of sound imposed by the almost too capable orchestra. And that is a shame, because Michael Schubert--yes, that wonder kind of the past three Pudding scores--has produced a most tuneful score, with just the right mix of dance numbers, love songs (of sorts) and punny quickies. Maybe I am going deaf, but I heard--and I suspect this to be true...
