There are those who will see umbrella-control as a threat to their constitutional rights, yet this is turning the issue on its head. Talk of an inalienable right to carry umbrellas is shameless sophistry and should be recognized as such. At issue is the right to use public throughoughfares without risk of personal injury or debilitating drenchings. Of course people should be able to chose how to protect themselves from the rain, but at what cost...

...This mindset sees improper jingoism in such movies as Rocky IV and Rambo. It views them as irrational, or at best incredibly simplistic. These movies present a fairy-land world of American virtue versus totalitarian evil; and since the world really is not anything like this, these movies are "shameless propaganda." They are alarmed by a federal court ruling applying the District of Columbia gay-rights law. The judges...

...before it, has been spurred by plummeting prices. Only two years ago, a machine cost more than $1,000 and a disk about $20. But today retailers sell them for as little as $180, while disks cost $12 to $14. Now that the CD no longer looks like a shameless frill, sales have zoomed. An estimated 600,000 players will be sold this year, compared with 240,000 in 1984 and just 35,000 in 1983. Says Alan Perper, marketing director for the Warner Brothers, Elektra and Atlantic record labels: "The drop in prices has made it a mass-market...
