...letter read at Masses in San Diego last week, Maher announced that no one in his 512,000-member diocese who publicly admits to membership in an organization that promotes abortion can receive the Eucharist or serve as a lector (lay reader). He specifically cited NOW for its "shameless agitation" on behalf of abortion...
...will some day collapse, taking his work down with them. A number of pieces in Guilty Pleasures are predicated on Richard Nixon, and their bite has already become gummy. One of the book's funnier stories (An Hesitation on the Bank of the Delaware) overcomes this loss through shameless slapstick. George Washington postpones his rowboat crossing until hearing whether Congress will continue to finance his personal extravagances. Speaking in an age when the printed s looked like an f, an aide informs the general that demands for his horse's accommodations have been rejected: "Both the Houfe Appropriation...
...bull ring, she is smolderingly present as a dangerous woman on the make. Whether stalking defiantly away from a woebegone Don José or melting luxuriously in his arms, this Carmen is a creature, almost a prisoner, of passion. (The bird, incidentally, is christened "Nixon's Vulture...
Only Alfred Drake, as Gaston's uncle, is an unalloyed delight though Agnes Moorehead as Gigi's worldly aunt is tartly amusing. As an inveterate and accomplished boulevardier with a mischievously saucy eye for maid or matron, Drake is a shameless charmer with voice that is pure gold. The score-much of it reprised from the film-is far and away the best part of the show. As for the negligible choreography, it seems rather like a course in ballroom deportment except for one cancan number, and anyone who can work up much excitement over the cancan...
