...spots. In Asia, access is provided by a hodgepodge of private businesses and independent operators, some offering it for free, others charging small fees. Nevertheless, some think that mobile network operators would be foolish to ignore it. Carriers "can roll out [Wi-Fi] services much quicker than 3G," says Shamir Amanullah, program leader at marketing consultancy Frost & Sullivan in Kuala Lumpur. "3G networks cost up to $1 billion to set up and that won't give them lots of pricing flexibility...
...Conflict between a Bush administration and a Likud Party-led government over settlements certainly has a familiar ring - the same issue provoked a public fallout between the first Bush administration and the government of Yitzhak Shamir, in which Washington threatened to withhold financial aid if Israel went ahead with settlement construction. This time around, both sides will be inclined to fight shy of a public confrontation, but there will inevitably be some tough diplomatic bargaining behind closed doors...
...most peculiar paradox hovers over the smoke and blood of the Middle East today. The current Palestinian uprising against Israel is aimed not at the government of Yitzhak Shamir or Benjamin Netanyahu, Likud leaders known for their hard line, but against Ehud Barak, the most dovish Israeli Prime Minister the Middle East has ever known. For his part, the Texas Governor is happy just to get a good photo op -- you never know when a good pic might resurface in a campaign...
...Make Peace?" appears to be a cynical question with regard to the election of Benjamin Netanyahu [WORLD, June 10]. It is better to revisit the elections of Israeli Prime Ministers like Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir and U.S. Presidents like Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Against heavy odds, they all surprised the world by opening up new avenues to peace despite their political-campaign rhetoric. Even Yasser Arafat proved that one can work toward peace under proper circumstances and receive a Nobel Peace Prize. Instead of being sarcastic about it, let us congratulate the people of Israel who elected Netanyahu...
