...about that "half of the Kingston Trio"... When founder Dave Guard left the group in 1960, John Stewart replaced him, joining Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane. The Trio was a late-'50s chart sensation that helped establish the album, not the single, as the unit of pop music. Reviled and/or envied by purists, the group nonetheless got a myriad of kids hooked on traditional music. They were the training wheels of the folk movement, and kept wearing their smiles and striped shirts for decades as a tribute band to themselves. Reynolds was 75, Stewart...

...Australia's long run of success contributed to a good feeling in the nation, coinciding as it did with a commodity-fueled economic boom. Its cricket prowess was helped by an apparently endless seam of talent: brilliant batsmen, fast bowlers and a spin bowler, Shane Warne, who managed to do things with a cricket ball that nobody had imagined for decades. He defined Mackey with his Mr. Clean physique, but his most valuable body parts are his eyes. To the end, as his options narrow and it becomes clear Mackey has destroyed everything he's tried to build, they dart about, looking...
