Grosse Pointe (the WB, Fridays starting Sept. 22, 8:30 p.m. E.T.) is a sitcom a clef: a behind-the-scenes satire of a teen soap that more than slightly resembles 90210. The pilot spares no one: not Star, whose clone on Pointe is a smarmy phony; not Shannen Doherty, whose reign of terror on the 90210 set is replicated eerily by Hunter Fallow (Irene Molloy). Nicely cast and smartly paced, it's a sassy, catty riot...
...blatant aim of this remake of a 1973 occult cult classic--hence the over-the-top visual effects, the showy lesbian overtones and the general '70s-horror vibe. Casting Kate Jackson, from the original Satan, shows how desperately this 6-6-sex flick wants cult cred. And casting Shannen Doherty of Charmed reminds us that there's cooler supernatural programming on several nights a week...

In truth, she's perfectly gracious and nonvolatile. Is there anything more you really wanted to know on the subject...

...Mallrats, Smith puts a clown face on the college-age glums. Life is awful, so let's go shopping, cruising, trashing. The movie's presiding goddess is a trash totem--famously troubled ex-teen Shannen Doherty as the primary lust object. A '50s teen pic for the '90s, Mallrats focuses on the attempts of Brodie (Jason Lee) and T.S. (Jeremy London) to win back their girlfriends on--eek!--a game show. But plot be darned; it's the texture, coarse but colorful, that counts--the pungent bustle of the action and Smith's wackily convoluted dialogue. The humor is gross...
