Shaw's plays are studies in conciseness language, and manners. In all three of these he succeeded. Laurier Lister, director of this production, felt, however, that this was not enough, and included some extra-Shavian additions. These, unfortunately, did not come off well. It might, of course, be argued that the gods were against the players. For the first of these flairs was that of a 1928 London taxi (presumably the only one in the U. S. today). ...working up so much creative lather with such a versatile hand, Ustinov is "embarrassed to say how much" he earns. His first love is the theater, especially playwriting. Though London critics have called him a master of stagecraft with a Shavian wit, Ustinov is keenly aware of their criticism that he "wins his battles but loses his campaigns." Monday evening's opening was marred by none of the foibles which often make the play long, tedious and choked with Shavian didacticism. The production moved quickly from the peaks of Shavian wit and left the sprawling valleys of Shaw's philosophizing to shift for themselves...
