Libertine, blasphemer, aristocratic scapegrace, eternal anarchist, the Don Juan of legend still enthralls and disturbs the Western consciousness. ...Berganza as Zerlina, Kenneth Riegel as Don Ottavio, all throw themselves into their roles with intensity, but only the exotic Kiri Te Kanawa, as Donna Elvira, manages to shake off some of Losey's heavy seriousness. Missing are the wit and verve, the "elate darting rhythms" with which Shaw said Mozart conveyed the spirit of the work. DIED. Eleanor Robson Belmont, 100, toast of the turn-of-the-century Broadway stage who became a leading fine arts patron; in New York City. A third-generation actress, Eleanor Robson triumphed in Merely Mary Ann and so impressed George Bernard Shaw that he wrote Major Barbara with her in mind. After a 1910 farewell bow before weeping fans, Robson married August Belmont, banker, racing-stable owner, and a multimillionaire nearly twice her age. Thus began a new role as society grande dame and philanthropist. Closest to her heart was the Metropolitan Opera, which she rescued in the lean 1930s...
What with the plot being so linear and the characters being so flat, there is nothing to hold one's attention except the sad reflection that the late .Robert Shaw (who plays the general, and whose last movie this is) spent too much of his career on such dismal efforts, as did Di rector Robson (The Champion), who has also died since principal photography was completed. Also present are Lee Mar vin, Linda Evans and Joe Namath, who wears cowboy getup to play a CIA type...
