Died. Ted Shawn, 80, doyen of modern dance in the U.S.; of a heart attack; in Orlando, Fla. Shawn was studying for the ministry when an attack of diphtheria left his legs paralyzed. The prescribed therapy-ballet exercises-worked so well that Shawn decided to "evangelize" through dance. Though the hulking six-footer's early performances were greeted with sneers, Shawn found an ally in the late Ruth St. Denis; they were married in 1914. ...Manhattan, the casting for the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar (TIME, Nov. 9) has been mostly showbiz. Long lines of hopefuls crowded outside the Mark Hellinger Theater last week to read for parts in a touring concert company that goes on the road July 12. John the Bold. The source of what is now known as the Kennedy determination to "work harder than anyone else" was, as nearly everyone knows, the garrulous mayor of Boston.
