This play-within-a-play method is older than Shakepeare, who used it frequently to shed some light on what he wanted us to get out of his works. Yet Shakespeare's internal plays are never exact replicas of the outside play. We have to find the similarities and work to learn the lessons. But in Romantic Comedy, there is no effort required to see the similarities. As you might expect, the lessons to be learned aren't really rewarding: as they say, no pain, no gain...

...world of academia has been astir lately with revelations about historic books and documents. Subscribers receiving their copy of the quarterly Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America found it devoted largely to analyses of paper and ink used in the Gutenberg Bible; the research shed new light on the production techniques used in Johann Gutenberg's print- shop. In Ann Arbor, Mich., UMI Research Press was shipping copies of The Calov Bible of J.S. Bach, which reveals that markings on the pages of the Bible owned by Bach were made by the great composer. The orchestra has won widespread praise for transforming itself from a hidebound institution into a more flexible, even innovative ensemble. Still, some listeners ask: At what price? Along with its former way of playing, has the orchestra also shed its soul? The musicians say no. In fact, they sing their conductor's praises so enthusiastically that they are referred to in musical circles, only half jokingly, as "Muti's Moonies." "Muti has been touched by God," says Concertmaster Norman Carol, who has held the post for 20 years...
