...Coover had his way, you would already be ordering hamburgers made from ground cloned beef. Coover is one of scores of U.S. farmers who have taken the trend toward homogeneity in American agriculture to its logical extreme, duplicating--Dolly the sheep style--their best beef and dairy cattle. Working out of his Galesburg, Kans., ranch, Coover has sold more than 500 units of semen from five cloned bulls, each of them a near perfect genetic replica of a prize breeder known as Full Flush. Now their semen is impregnating cows across the U.S., spawning champion offspring that are, technically, half...

This is the sixth-floor lab in Building No. 85 at Seoul National University, the center of operations for Woo Suk Hwang, the South Korean scientist who made headlines last week when he announced that his team, using Dolly-the-sheep techniques, had created 11 human stem-cell lines perfectly matched to the DNA of human patients--a giant leap beyond anything any other lab has achieved. While the former handled the majority of the singing while picking away at what looked like a guitar version of the McCartney style viola-base, the latter harmonized in a higher register while covering most of the guitar work himself. Indeed, Oldham would often swing his axe behind his back and concentrate on singing, switching between stances and making a variety of gestures with...
