...case in point is the prison scene. The day of D.W. Griffith has passed, and sheer numbers on the screen no longer amaze anyone. Kurosawa, however, manages to restore our old sense of wonder by taking his shots from impressive angles and by composing each sequence powerfully. We watch a limitless mob suddenly spring to life in their enormous dungeon; at the peak of their fury only the tips of their improvised clubs are visible, flailing fiercely up and down in the prison gloom. Then the camera shifts to the hill outside. From a point at the base...

Both outfields are extremely strong and Detroit is by no means at a disadvantage. Rocky Colavito (.290, 45 HR's, 140 RBI's) has as much sheer power as anyone in the league. Fleet Billy Burton (.257, 22 SB's) remains near the top in a league of brilliant defensive center-fielders. Kaline in right hit .325 last year and led the league in doubles...

...sheer, outstanding inability, Lieutenant Hutton quickly rises to the top of the nut heap. He is a go-day-wonder-how-he-made-it who begins the war as a casualty (he tries to catch a baseball with his ear), continues it as a sad sack (he reports for duty by hitting the wrong pedal, ramming his jeep through the side of a building, parking it smartly beside the C.O.'s desk), but ends it as a hero (he captures the gefilte-fisherman). The nut occasionally has a date: Lieutenant Prentiss, a nurse who in civilian life was "just...

While the defense body-checked and battered M.I.T. into greater and greater submission, Munro played his third, fourth, and fifth midfields and tried a variety of player combinations to strengthen his team. If there were flashes of sheer genius in yesterday's game, there were also phases of sloppiness. Munro cited "poor passing" as a key varsity problem and prescribed "more practice" to solve the dilemma...

Perhaps the most conspicuously disagreeable apect of Six Crises--although one is reluctant to admit it--is the book's sheer lack of taste. It reads like some bizarre hybrid of the worst elements of Rousseau's Confessions and Whittaker Chambers' Witness; its most private disclosures are embarrassing and theatrical. There is something not quite right, for example, in Mrs. Nixon's urging her husband not to withdraw from the ticket during the "Fund Scandal." "If you, in the face of attack," she says, "do not fight back but simply crawl away, you will destroy yourself. Your life will...
