...would find the Higgs boson and thus prove his theory. A particle detector called ATLAS, for instance, is 150 ft (46 m) long, 82 ft (25 m) high, weighs 7,000 tons and is connected to enough cable and wiring to wrap around the earth nearly seven times. "The sheer scale of the detectors was overwhelming," Higgs later said, displaying about as much emotion as you get from this restrained British scientist. Another outpouring: "I suppose I'll open a bottle of something if they find...

...spring concert spotlighted a washed up band reminiscent of our middle school years, Yardfest 2008 invites students to spend the night—not afternoon—swaying to both Gavin DeGraw’s sensitive crooning and Wu-Tang Clan’s lyrical hip hop. The sheer caliber of artists, relative to last year’s, is evidence that the new CEB has made extra efforts to ensure a good show. Moreover, the combined ticket of DeGraw and Wu-Tang Clan appeals to the wide swath of musical tastes found at Harvard. The two distinct acts cater...

...Unfortunately, despite its intellectual merit and entertainment value, the book sometimes becomes bogged down by the sheer volume of what Lee has to offer to her readers. A chapter on trying to find the best Chinese restaurant in the world seems superfluous and a bit boring compared with the rest of the book. She tends to use exaggerated descriptions, especially in relation to food and friends, that divulge little of interest. And while no one can fault her for her devotion to reporting, all of the names tied to all of the histories do prove confusing. Lee is more effective...

McGregor's most challenging material, however, has been reserved for his own London-based troupe, Wayne McGregor Random Dance. Founded in 1992, Random astounds audiences with the sheer strangeness of his vision. A computer buff from an early age, McGregor has used Poser software (originally designed for gamers) to generate movement, and incorporated ideas like algorithms and cognitive mapping into his work. In Sulphur 16 (1998), his dancers performed among spectral computer-generated figures, as if in a human-scale chess game. In Nemesis (2002), inspired in part by insect behavior, his dancers dueled with prosthetic steel arm extensions...

...Arguably, though, the sheer engineering ingenuity of the F1 teams has diminished the sport's appeal. All 11 teams contesting the championship this year have produced machines of amazing quality. And all F1's pilots possess extraordinary gifts, not least the ability to make split-second decisions on steering, gear changes and strategy under the most trying conditions. But sport at the highest level is about separating the great from the really good, and some engineering advances have muddied the process. Part of all cars' armory from 2002-'07 was traction control, an electronic aid that kicks in when...
