Preparing a special issue of TIME like the one you're holding takes careful planning. The biggest problem, says PHILIP ELMER-DEWITT, the assistant managing editor who supervised the project, is the issue's sheer size. "I realized straight off that if I had to edit 92 pages all at once, I'd burst," he says. So he, deputy chief of reporters ANDREA DORFMAN, and TIME's science staff began working on it nearly a year ago; by last fall their list of the greatest minds of the century had been boiled down to a few dozen names. Between occasional shouts of "Eureka!" even the heroes of science tend to have quiet careers. But Salk's career stands out in at least two respects: the sheer speed with which he outraced all the other tortoises in the field and the honors he did not receive for doing so. ...best part of every lesson was the end, when we "evaluated" our day's work. (A piece of advice for future students in the course: don't eat dinner before class.) Of course, the best-tasting items would be the ones we team-cooked with Mike. The sheer amount of food we cooked was enormous-I have enough leftovers in the fridge to feed certain small republics. If only every class at Harvard were this enjoyable...

...alterna-boys and their hipper chicks. Even teenage rave kids were to be found bumming cigarettes and acting cool. Nobody paid much attention to the opening acts; instead they swarmed around the six bars that service this converted ballroom. Playtopia, the second opener, got some attention by the sheer volume of their amps. Despite much heckling and hooting to the contrary, I thought these guys' blend of pure noise and screamed goofy lyrics like "Here come the worms, the worms of doubt" was actually pretty funny. By the time Sebadoh hit the stage, the crowd was rowdy and raring...
