...Edith (not Emily) Bishop's shrewish portrayal of Lady Macbeth. Her performance was, as Mandel points out, exquisite, but she deserved far more praise than Mandel gave her. To eliminate Colapinto from Mandel's list of quality elements of the show, to attack his work as "poor judgment or sheer incompetence," and to downplay Bishop's excellence, is wrong. Mandel is welcome to her opinion, but the mean-spirited tone of the article was both unfair and unnecessary; the highlighted quotes and headlines only helped Mandel blame any and all problems with the show on Colapinto. Many who read...

...money was all in Getty Oil stock, and its sheer bulk was obviously going to force the trustees of the J. Paul Getty Trust to revise their ideas of a cultural mission. The man mainly responsible for this reshaping was Harold Williams, former head of the Securities and Exchange Commission in the Carter Administration and dean of UCLA's Graduate School of Management. In 1981 the Getty Trust hired Williams to manage the money and figure out what the new institution should...

...former Beatle isn't the only rock musician currently trying his hand at classical composition--Billy Joel announced in September that his plans include not only working on Broadway but also composing Rachmaninoff-like solo piano pieces--but Sir Paul sweeps the table when it comes to sheer audaciousness. McCartney, who cannot read music and readily confesses to having attended only a handful of classical concerts, has been no less forthright in acknowledging the extensive role played by four "musical associates." Jazz musician Steve Lodder and classical composer David Matthews transcribed and edited his original computerized keyboard noodlings; classical saxophonist...

...brisk and deliberate--as, for example, in the famous cuckoo trill bridging the second and third movements. Tipler's choice of tempi was a little mystifying, especially in the second movement, where Beethoven's idyllic brook sounded more like a flooded cataract. There were times, however, when the sheer beauty of the music soared and the peaceful, spiritual emotions shone through...

...difficult to believe that this is the reaction that the play's producers wanted to provoke. The problem is that whatever the reason behind Colapinto's self-centered, petulant rendition of Macbeth--be it poor judgement, a deliberate attempt at experimentation, or sheer incompetence--it undermines the drama and terror essential to the play. By subverting Macbeth's atmosphere of tragedy, Colapinto's performance ultimately prevents the production from generating the fear and explosive emotion which the play is intended to evovoke. To take the Aristotelian approach, it denies us the catharsis of tragedy. To use layman's terms...
