...Kaysen later pointed out, the conference organizers had no obligation to represent all areas of the political spectrum. Still, it seems likely that the conference would have been more successful if they had made a concerted effort to pull in the fringes. Shepherd Stone, the President of the International Association for Cultural Freedom which sponsored the conference, originally justified the choice of conferees as an attempt to insure "rational discussion." But one had an annoying sense that it was the style of discussion, as much as the size of the conference or its organization, that hamstrung its efforts...

...results a sense of restrained favor in the playing which makes up for occasional lapses in comic timing. A great deal of good-natured conviction appears on stage inSchweyk, and from the standpoint again of didactic theater, nothing is so important as this. John Tatlock as Schweyk and Gerard Shepherd as his gluttonous companion Baloun are admirable, though I wished in each case for certain qualities of size, and especially of what can only be called earthiness--which only actors of considerably more age and experience can be expected to convey. ...such far-out attempts are taken entirely seriously. Animals play a major role on both sides of the conflict. More than 1,000 dogs are in action on the allied side alone, and nearly 100 veterinarians serving in the U.S. Army in Viet Nam help care for them. The shepherds have an uncanny knack for avoiding booby traps (apparently, their ears...

...least one dog has achieved some notoriety in a specialty. Taddy, a 65-pound German shepherd bitch, has become expert at giving departing U.S. troopers-either home-or R & R-bound -a thorough sniff-over for hidden marijuana. She is so sharp that she recently nosed out two joints carefully tucked away in a man's camera that was inside his suitcase...

...cannot-include any of the near-legendary series of frescoes to which pilgrims trek, vignettes from major masters, together with larger pictures by significant unknowns, have been included. Giotto, Italy's first great fresco painter, is represented by a fragment showing the leonine head of a shepherd, Piero della Francesca by a lone saint. The gentle spirit of Fra Angelico is manifest in a lunette from the Florentine cloister of San Marco. It portrays St. Peter Martyr (a 13th century Dominican monk) putting his finger to his lips to enjoin the monks to silence...
