Died. Harold Keates Hales, 74, eccentric donor of the Hales Blue Riband Trophy for speed crossings by transatlantic liners; by accidental drowning in the Thames; near Shepperton-on-Thames, England. He was a roly-poly little china merchant who saved his money for 40 years in order to have an impressive trophy to bestow (temporarily) every time a ship broke the speed record.
