...Rivals, by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, is the play that introduced Mrs. Malaprop and herisms to the world. It's getting a Mainstage production with a professional director, Norman Ayrton, so chances are that it should be good, I guess. The play itself is simply eleemosynary. Opens tonight at 8 at the Loeb...
Warren Oates is a fine Dillinger as far as the script will allow, which isn't very far. He even looks a little like Bogart in several scenes, especially in a jail sequence where you expect. Ann Sheridan to visit him any second with a nailfile baked in a pie. The rest of the cast is excellent, and everyone has a terrific American southwest accent. The only disappointment is Michelle Phillips as Billie Frechette, who manages to look like both Faye Dunaway and Ali McGraw, the new gun molls of the '70s (Eecch!). Her acting regrettably takes faithfully after...
...prolific. Etherege wrote only three plays; Wycherley, four; Vanbrugh (also renowned as an architect), three and a half; Congreve (the most accomplished of the group), five; and Farquhar, seven and a half. This corpus laid the foundation and set the standard for the two supreme masterpeices of the genre: Sheridan's The School for Scandal, a century later; and Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, two centuries later...
...familiar witch's brew of paper locals, hanky-panky with the enormous pension funds, involvement with a Mafia Who's Who, intimidation of the few labor leaders who protested the corruption of their union. Hoffa and his associates started with the premise that Richard Nixon owed them one. In 1960 Eisenhower's Attorney General, William Rogers, was about...
Fall and Rise is a sad book. Sheridan admits that despite Robert Kennedy's crusade, the Teamsters have changed little. Despite the law-and-order banner, the Administration seems happy to play footsie with this tainted union. Despite the restriction imposed in the commutation of Hoffa's sentence - he is barred from an active leader ship role in the union until 1980 - ways around that problem can be found, or the terms can be amended. Before the next election...
