Black and White. Given these constraints, Director Edwin Sherin (The Great White Hope) has worked something of a miracle. His cast might be a repertory group. Performers work at peak level; if Stefan Gierasch is to be singled out for excellence, it is not because he is better but because his crippled old ranch hand is written as operatic bathos and yet is played with unfailing dignity...
...Depression. Morris Carnovsky, who starred in the play's original production, has come up to Cambridge to recreate the role of Jacob, and that alone is reason enough to see the show. The other performers complement Carnovsky's brilliant portrayal of the philosophic uncle, and director John Sherin manages to bring Odets's spirit back to life. Weekday shows begin at 8, tickets cost $4.95 tonight and tomorrow, $5.95 on Thursday...
Director Edwin Sherin's stage movement is brisk and effective, but there is no wildness in it, no sense of irrational forces fiercely at play. Among the rest of the cast, only Rene Auberjonois as Edgar rises above rep company competence. If his fellows had his verve and imagination, this Lear might have been more than just another turn by a gifted, but perhaps overly ambitious, star...
...their souls, while she narcotizes the poor with a Salvation Army soup-kitchen dole that makes them compliant addicts of their own degradation. Somewhat overpowered in the debate, Alexander is also over matched in the role, lacking Richard son's explosive charm and easy com mand. Under Edwin Sherin's impeccable direction, a dozen character sketches in depth are expertly rendered. The British accents are flawless and the set is hermetically sealed in a world of timeless Edwardia...
Director Edwin Sherin has elicited a remarkable set of performances from his fourteen main characters, with only two exceptions. Lee Richardson's Undershaft is best of all-forceful and unshakeable from start to finish. (And he really plays the prescribed tune from Doninetti's Lucia on a trombone). Lady Brit is his separated wife, a woman given to bossing and tossing off epigrams--clearly modeled on Lady Bracknell in Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, written a decade earlier. Jan Miner, in a performance that brings to mind Jessica Tandy, is doing in this role far and away...
