Quartet (Rank; Eagle Lion), British cinema's talent-studded gift to Somerset Maugham on his 75th birthday, is a neatly packaged film based on four unrelated Maugham short stories. Expertly scripted by R. C. Sherriff (Odd Man Out, This Above All, etc.) and urbanely introduced by Author Maugham himself, it also makes a handsomely mounted gift for moviegoers who don't insist on all the Hollywood formulas...
Grappling with history, this Alexander Korda production of an R. C. Sherriff-Walter Reisch screen play moves like the flow of molasses. Possibly because the narrative is a series of flashback recollections of Lady Hamilton, reclining in prison during her alcoholic dotage, its ponderous plodding can be attributed to the senility of the narrator. ...small, smug thoughts and words of Edgar Hopkins (poultry breeder and amateur astronomer), Ex-Insurance Clerk Robert Cedric Sherriff (Journey's End, St. Helena) gives an insect's-eye view of what happened when the moon got out of whack in 1945, plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, all but wiped out Europe by tornado, earthquake and flood. The moon's havoc was less than the human havoc which followed. England, now changed from an island to a landlocked meadow on the fringe of Europe, demanded a "British Corridor" to the sea at Gibraltar, but the Corridor blocked...
