...Sherwood Collins has directed with an eye for striking light effects and sharp blackouts. He helps give the show backbone where it has none. And the players, all 14 of them, are uniformly good, projecting age convincingly and boasting authentic-sounding accents. Even the accents that wouldn't fool a Midlands mockingbird are consistent, and that is what counts. Best of all, this production somehow catches the gypsy superstition and ballady poetry of the play, and never lets the numberless moments of high passion numb the audience...

Preminger's cast is wild, probably deliberately so. He has Michael Caine playing a somewhat selfmade Southern wheeler-dealer, and Jane Fonda as his wife; Burgess Meredith and Madeline Sherwood portray a small-town judge and his wife; and John Philip Law and Faye Dunaway are a poor (but honest) farmer and his wife. Rounding out the cast, in two unfailingly thankless roles, are Robert Hooks -- also a poor but honest farmer -- and Diahann Carroll, the latter as a local girl gone North and corrupted...

"Slim" Lindbergh looked like the original country rube, with cowlick and baggy breeches, and he stirred folk memories; there was about him something of the raggedy fellow at the Sherwood tournament who outshoots the sheriff's best archers...
