When the nominees for the 39th annual Grammy Awards were announced last week, a lot of familiar, if not shopworn, names were on the list, including Bryan Adams, Sheryl Crow and Journey. There were also, thankfully, some fresh, exciting names--the Haitian-American hip-hop band the Fugees certainly deserved their nomination in the Album of the Year category, as teenage country crooner LeAnn Rimes did hers for Best New Artist. But one name stood out from all the others. Or rather, kind of leaned against the wall, looking cooler than everyone else in the vicinity in a throwback...

...known pop acts. "As a result, bands don't have the fan base they would normally develop by touring--they don't have a chance to build an audience. MTV also burns out its acts. They take alternative bands and play them to death." Example: semialternative pop-folk singer Sheryl Crow. Videos from her first album, Tuesday Night Music Club, were as inescapable as death, taxes and junk mail on AOL. By the time she released her new album, Sheryl Crow, a lot of people seemed sick of her--sales of her sophomore album have been underwhelming. And it hasn...

Al Cafaro, president of A&M records, doesn't seem worried about losing Sting or Sheryl Crow anytime soon. "I don't want to say always," he says, "but generally artists want to reach as many people as they...

Charity makes strange stagefellows. SHERYL CROW and LUCIANO PAVAROTTI dipped into each other's arias of expertise for Pavarotti and Friends for War Child, a concert recording that's intended to raise money for children in war-torn areas. Crow gamely attempted a duet from Mozart's Don Giovanni. Pavarotti almost as bravely launched into Holy Mother with Eric Clapton, Live Like Horses with Elton John and New York, New York with Liza Minnelli. The album's almost worth a listen just to hear him go for the big notes in "Myyyy little town blooos...

...course, not all music invites analysis. There's no need to parse the meaning of Sheryl Crow's song Love Is a Good Thing (the point, it's pretty clear, is that love is a good thing). Muddy Banks, however, is more complex. It's a raw, fast, loud CD that starts with a scream and ends with the roar of a crowd--fitting bookends for Nirvana's too-brief career...
