...HAZY SUN SET OVER THE GREEN hills of blood-soaked Natal Province last week, Jabulani Shibe tried to do his part to broker the differences between the African National Congress and its bitter foes in the Inkatha Freedom Party. Shibe, 27, a laborer, joined eight of his neighbors in KwaMashu, a black township near Durban, and visited an Inkatha hostel. Suddenly, a group of Inkatha men drew guns and bundled Shibe and his companions into a minibus. They drove through the darkness to a nearby railroad station, where an armed and angry mob of Inkatha supporters was waiting...

...Inkatha men told Shibe that he was shot in revenge for the bloodshed in downtown Johannesburg, where a day earlier thousands of Zulus clashed with A.N.C. security guards and police in running gun battles through the city's steel and glass canyons. The violence, said Inkatha leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi ominously, marked the beginning of "a final struggle to the finish between the A.N.C. and the Zulu nation...

...least ten years aging before they might be countenanced on the diamond. It may be a century before products of the sandlots assimilate the Designated Hitter. Such gaudy perversions have me clinging to the Goldberg's Peanut Chews billboard which one adorned the left field wall in extinct Shibe Park's power alley. Still, there is nothing like the day-to-day exhilaration of a pennant race to lend life--whether it is endured in a crusty New England college or not a hot inner-city alley--a sharpness. Furthermore, I will be the first to castigate trivia fiends...

...Phils, who have been the butt of most baseball jokes since Shibe Park became Connie Mack Stadium, probably will inspire a whole new series of jokes this coming season. The Phils did quite a bit of dealing over the winter--but it is doubtful that General Manager Paul Owens bluffed anybody. New acquisitions Dave Cash and Ron Schueler are good ball players, but they are not miracle men--so the Philly fans needn't delude themselves. Of course the big question mark is Steve Carlton. If the big lefty will stop endorsing products and start pitching like...
