...formula has not worked as well as it should have. The South Vietnamese army has taken to pacification duty only reluctantly; it contains pockets of corruption and indifference toward the peasants. Saigon's Revolutionary Development Teams formed to carry out pacification in hamlets behind the ARVN shield have had hard going, largely because the Viet Cong have killed nearly 1,000 team members...
...Spacecraft Center, the lifeboat is a rigid 400-lb. fiber glass shell lined with polyurethane foam and shaped like an old French bathtub-narrower at one end than at the other. It is 6 ft. long, 4| ft. wide, 21 ft. deep. Sheathed in a Johnson-designed nylon heat shield for re-entry into the earth's atmosphere, the craft is equipped with a swivel-mounted retrorocket, attitude-control jets, a transponder for ground control, a built-in oxygen supply, a parachute and a survival kit. Johnson envisions a typical Apollo spacecraft as carrying three such lifeboats...
...usable only on near-earth orbits. Even so, work on it has progressed further than on any other rescue system. Small-scale models have been repeatedly drop-tested in laboratory experiments. Computerized simulations of re-entry have uncovered potential flaws that are being corrected; Johnson's nylon heat shield has stood up well under rigorous tests at NASA's Langley Research Center. Next step: drop tests of the full-size boat in the earth's atmosphere, and then an unmanned test in space...
Though Tshombe could not be extradited for purely political reasons, ruled the Algerian Supreme Court, "Algerian justice does not shield murder and robbery." If President Houari Boumediene ratifies the Court's decision Tshombe must go home-presumably to his doom. For the best-known avocat in the French-speaking world, it was a rare, bitter defeat. In 20,000 cases, Floriot has lost only two clients to the guillotine and about ten to the firing squad...
...problem in our policy of "containment" as the inherited phrase, inherited by default. I think it's way out of date. If it ever mean anything, it certainly doesn't apply in the Vietnamese situation. Containment in Europe was a sensible enough, political, economic effort behind a military shield to revive prostrate democracy in an industralized society. This worked in Japan also. And so we got into the pjhrase "containment" in the case of the Korean aggression which was so obviously aggressive. And to "contain" Taiwan with the Navy is easy enough. But in the situation...
