Washington was increasingly confident that it could contain any military thrust from Iraq. As Operation Desert Shield, which features the largest airlift in history, continued, the day when the U.S. and allied forces would have sufficient strength to conduct offensive operations against Iraq was rapidly approaching, especially since Defense Secretary Dick Cheney has persuaded other gulf countries like Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to provide logistical facilities. In less than two weeks, the U.S. has sent nearly 100,000 troops and a billion pounds of supplies, the equivalent, Pentagon officials boasted, of moving a community the size...

Hussein's relations with Iraq have warmed over the past decade, mainly as a shield against rising fundamentalism and Israel's designs to turn his kingdom into a Palestinian state. He has had to acknowledge the pan-Arabist, anti-U.S. passions of his citizens -- at least half of whom are Palestinian -- which have only increased as the peace process has stalled. Hussein refused to join the Arab League's original condemnation of Iraq, calling the move premature. "I believe ((Saddam)) is a person to be trusted and dealt with," he declared...

Pauley keeps a tight lid on details of her family life, partly for security reasons, partly because of a determination to shield her children from the public spotlight. But there is another, more philosophical consideration. "To the degree that your family becomes part of your image," she says, "it becomes less real. I am very sensitive to the fact that there's a certain imagemaking attendant to my career...

...points to a cautionary science- fiction tale by Stanislaw Lem. In Lem's Fiasco, space explorers discover a Saturn-like planet with a ring around it. On closer inspection, the ring turns out to be a swarm of attack satellites and killer robots, part of a "star wars" defense shield that had reproduced itself over and over again. Artificial life, says Farmer, could turn out to be man's most beautiful creation. Or, like Lem's swarming robots, it could be a nightmare...

Another group of officers has banded together in an organization called Shchit (Shield), dedicated to democratizing the notoriously conservative military. Shchit's members have demanded that Communist Party committees be removed from military units so that all political parties can compete equally for support among the troops. "Our goal is to make sure that the army is never again used against its own people," says Vitali Urazhtsev, 46, Shchit's founder. The group claims to have 3,000 members in military installations around the country...
