It was John Dewey's 80th birthday, and many distinguished men and women-among them Chinese Ambassador Hu Shih, Charles Beard, Mrs. Eugene Meyer, Fiorello LaGuardia-had come to his party. Nine organizations, including the Progressive Education Association and American Philosophical Association, had arranged to honor him. Honor him they did, with oratory and applause. In Shanghai, fortnight ago, the puppet secretary of the city's Japanese-controlled Police Bureau, Dr. Hsi Shih-tai, was assassinated as he walked in the street with his wife. This was the 17th political murder in Shanghai since January 1. In Tientsin the Chinese manager of the Japanese-owned Federal Reserve Bank was shot while watching others shot in the film Gunga Din. Of three men who are rated by many as Asia's most influential leaders- China's Philosopher-poet Dr. Hu Shih (now Ambassador to the U. S.), India's Mahatma Gandhi, Japan's Dr. Toyohiko Kagawa-only the last is a Christian. Dr. Kagawa, soft-faced, almost blind "Greatest Christian" of Japan, preaches economic and moralistic doctrines which today are completely at variance with those of Japan's rulers.
