...heavy over Cairo and the rest of Gamal Abdel Nasser's Egypt. The city police have changed their blue flannel uniforms to summer whites. Jacaranda trees are blooming richly purple in suburban Heliopolis, remnants of the district's lost elegance. While the triple peaks of the pyramids of Giza shimmer on the horizon, stately feluccas sail down the Nile as silently as they have done for centuries. Overhead, hawks wheel lazily in gyres. The pace of the people in their flowing gallabia robes, never very fast, has grown a step or two slower...

...result of Schippers' assemblage is a remarkable triumph of sight and sound. Though the opening scenes are somewhat workaday Rossini, the opera comes into its full glory in the third act, which begins with an unusually long (14 minutes) aria by Home. Rossini's lyrical melodies shimmer and flow as beautifully as a moonlit Aegean. Behold, a blue shimmer of paint appears below the surface, and a professional restorer uncovers a remarkable signature-"Claude Monet, 1877." Now fully restored, the canvas appears to be one of Monet's largest impressionistic versions of Paris' Gare St. Lazare. But how did Monet ever get covered over? Easy: it was the vogue...

...another day, the rising sun was just beginning to shimmer over the Long Tau when Chief Signalman Bob Monzingo clamped on the black beret worn by U.S. Navymen in Viet Nam, stepped aboard PBR (Patrol Boat River) 756 and headed for a rendezvous with the fully loaded U.S. tanker Kalydon. So did the Viet Cong. Three hours later, the battle exploded. From the Long Tau's east bank, ambushers fired five Communist-made B40 rockets at the tanker. All five missed, and Monzingo's two-boat force foamed toward the attackers, blasting away with M-60 machine guns...
