...targets in retaliation for a series of bomb explosions that killed two Israeli teenagers and a shooting that killed a 10-month-old child. The air strikes destroyed the headquarters of Yasser Arafat's Force 17 élite guard, killing two people and wounding at least 60. Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said the bombardment of Gaza and Ramallah was a warning to Yasser Arafat to discipline his militant supporters, but the Palestinian leader said the uprising would continue "until the Palestinian flag is raised on the walls, churches and mosques of holy Jerusalem." Sharon convened his cabinet at 6:30 Wednesday evening with a joke that has serious implications for peace. The Prime Minister had just held a meeting with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, who shared a Nobel Peace Prize with Arafat for the Oslo peace accords. Sharon, whose reputation is as hawkish as Peres' is dovish, told his cabinet that Peres had advocated a stronger response: "Peres is more aggressive than I am." The committee, created last October, is seeking ways of reducing Israeli-Palestinian violence, which has now cost more than 400 lives. But Bush said the U.S would not "force peace," and the cia would no longer act as a broker in the region...

...needs to watch his back. Mikhail Gorbachev won in 1990 and was tossed into oblivion in 1991. Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho were honored in 1973 for negotiating to end the Vietnam War - which didn't end until 1975, on terms hardly flattering to Kissinger. Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat were the winners in 1994; Rabin was assassinated, Arafat is embattled, and peace in the Middle East is becoming even more remote...
