What makes it shine is that Ondaatje alchemizes these abstract spaces with a poet's fluent radiance. Scene after scene shimmers with the jeweled brilliance of Arab poetry. The Indian alone, in the course of his wanderings, walks through cities where corpses are strung from trees and sleeps beside angels in deserted churches. He sees the Virgin Mary emerging from the sea (until her batteries give out), and he finds himself one of 12 defusers alone in a city without lights. Woven through such flights are colorful threads of historical arcana: richly researched evocations of the "desert Englishmen...

...record company in New Jersey called Bar/None has a real comer in Freedy Johnson. His album, titled Can You Fly, features the idiosyncratic singer-songwriter stalking his own subconscious, sounding like a cross between Hank Williams (on The Mortician's Daughter) and a skid-row Springsteen (on We Will Shine). John Prine had a wonderful new album a few months back, The Missing Years (Oh Boy), and Luka Bloom's The Acoustic Motorbike (Reprise) is like Celine in high spirits. ...nights and one-nights, has the moral authority of a man who's found mellow wisdom on hard roads. He tells us, in The Hank Williams Syndrome Is Dead, that it's better to trust an artist's songs than to imitate his misspent life. In Didn't We Shine? he administers balm to all lost loves: "But I've long ago forgiven you/ For what you did or didn't do." With these witty, poignant songs, Jennings proves that the country heart is equidistant from the brain and the gut. Keep on Waylon...
