...Ayatullah Khomeini was burned in effigy. In Beverly Hills, an anti-Shah demonstration by Iranian students turned into a near riot, with onlookers shouting obscenities at the Iranians. In New York City, at the close of an Iranian student demonstration, a Columbia University undergraduate shouted: "We're gonna ship you back, and you aren't gonna like it! No more booze. No more Big Macs. No more rock music. No more television. No more sex. You're gonna get on that plane at Kennedy, and when you get off in Tehran, you're gonna be back in the 13th century...
...missions in Peking. It was in part to protect American lives that Dwight Eisenhower dispatched Marines to Lebanon in 1958, and Lyndon Johnson sent them to the Dominican Republic in 1965. In Washington's most recent use of force, Gerald Ford ordered U.S. units to retake the merchant ship Mayaguez, which had been seized by Cambodia's new Communist regime...
Pierce was neither strong nor vigorous, but he decided to sound that way for the sake of his image. The blow-dried Chad Everett (Medical Center) is cast as a Pulitzer-prizewinning author who wears what appears to be a Pulitzer Prize medal on a gold chain around his neck. There are real French actors in the cast - Marie-France Pisier, Louis Jourdan - as well as ersatz French men like James Coco. Brooklynese is provided by Shelley Winters, who seems...
...yelling match with her manager (a somewhat forlorn Alan Bates) or plays in bed with her pickup of a lover (a frisky, sexy Frederic Forrest), the closeups are steamy and relentless. When Rose lands by helicopter at her nighttime stadium concerts, it looks like the arrival of the mother ship in Close Encounters (both films were shot by Vilmos Zsigmond). The movie's many drunken barroom brawls, not to mention its gratuitous excursions into the gay demimonde, unfold in gaudy, neon-tinged studio sets. This is vulgarity at its most absurd and most amusing...
