...Royal Caribbean cruise ship on a trip to Baja California returned early to Los Angeles last week after more than 400 passengers came down with an unidentified intestinal ailment. It may have been the reason one elderly man died. And just a few weeks ago, 1,200 disgruntled passengers were evacuated from the ocean liner Horizon in Bermuda because of the threat of Legionnaires' disease. Among customers on previous Horizon voyages this summer, there have been 11 confirmed cases of the potentially fatal pneumonia-like illness and 24 suspected cases. At least one victim died...
Space shuttle Endeavour's launch was aborted just 1.9 sec. before liftoff. The problem was an overheated fuel pump in one of the ship's giant rocket engines. It was the fifth mission scrubbed on the launching pad in 64 flights...
...major triumph for the President, a measure to stall the crime bill was shot down in the Senate. The move failed by a 61-to-39 vote, with six Republicans defecting from the party line. One Democrat, Richard Shelby of Alabama, jumped ship and voted against the White House position. Clinton praised the Senate, but much of the action in the vaunted upper chamber was downright embarrassing. Among the notable lows: New York's Al D'Amato singing a barnyard song to rally the opposition. Expect a vote on the crime bill tomorrow or Saturday...
