...Antwerp shipyard last week went three-year-old Princess Josephine Charlotte, daughter of handsome dark-haired Crown Prince Leopold and Princess Astrid, to launch the S.S. Princess Josephine Charlotte, a new Channel steamer for the Dover-Ostend run. Since a champagne bottle would have been, unwieldy for her diminutive Highness, thoughtful company officials tied a bright pink ribbon from the ship's prow to the launching platform. At the appropriate moment Princess Josephine Charlotte toddled to the edge of the platform, snipped the ribbon with a tiny pair of gold-plated scissors. The steamer slid majestically into the water...
...Newport. Skipper Harold Stirling Vanderbilt won three more trial races with his America's cup yacht, Enterprise. Weetamoe beat her once but Enterprise made her default, protesting interference. Whirlwind went back to the shipyard to have her mast moved forward a bit, her underbody (hastily finished) scraped and repainted. Whirlwind was hopelessly beaten, Yankee still proved fast off the wind. So far Enterprise seems likeliest to meet Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock V, though no trials have yet been sailed in a heavy wind. The formal elimination races come July 7 off Newport, the Cup races begin Sept...
...Island Sound last week. While she stood by during three races, George Ratsey looked over her sails, which he had built at his City Island lofts. (He also made the sails for the other defenders.) Fortunately for the Yankee, she rode quite a distance away from the Robert Jacob shipyard on City Island. Fire damaged that yard's pier. It destroyed about $200,000 worth of trophies, guns, silver, sails and equipment owned by Otto H. Kahn, William G. Vanderbilt, Walter P. Chrysler and others. Their vessels were absent. The fire also destroyed the winter home of the Vanitie...
Empress of Britain. Seated on a workman's hoist at a Glasgow shipyard last week, H. R. H. Princess Mary rose vertically 100 feet in air, was swung onto the deck of the half-completed 40,000 ton Empress of Britain...
Whirlwind. Mrs. Edwin Thorne, mother of Landon Ketchum Thorne, Manhattan banker, broke the bottle, and the America's Cup contender in which her son owns the biggest share tilted easily down its ways in the shipyard of George Lawley & Son at Neponset, Mass. Head up, like a horse freed in pasture, the Whirlwind checked up off Squantum Island, her waterline standing out between her white topsides and the green paint on her mahogany underbody. She is 130 ft. overall, 86 ft. on the water; she has a canoe-like stern, long, overhanging bow, a longer and squarer keel than...
